Wo leben Stachelschweine in Europa?
Obwohl für Europa mehrere Arten fossil nachgewiesen sind, leben heute nur noch in Italien Stachelschweine. Dabei handelt es sich um Vertreter des Gewöhnlichen Stachelschweins (Hystrix cristata), das in weiten Teilen Afrikas anzutreffen ist.
Warum heißt das Stachelschwein Stachelschwein?
Das Stachelschwein heißt nur so, weil seine rundlichen Formen ein wenig an ein Ferkel erinnern. Es ist aber, ebenso wie das Meerschweinchen, ein Nagetier, und zwar nach dem Biber das zweitgrößte in Europa! Immerhin werden die Nager etwa 75 Zentimeter lang und rund 18 Kilogramm schwer.
