What was the WSPU and what did it do?
The Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) was founded in Manchester in October 1903. The WSPU campaigned for social reform through protests such as hunger strikes and property damage. Its militant stance is summed up in its slogan: “Deeds, not words”.

What happened to the WSPU after the women’s rights bill failed?
The WSPU changed tactics following the failure of the bill; they focused on attacking whichever political party was in government and refused to support any legislation which did not include enfranchisement for women. This translated into abandoning their initial commitment to also supporting immediate social reforms.
Who criticized the WSPU?
This was the criticism made by Ray Strachey in 1928 and it has been repeated many times since. The WSPU never had a formal constitution and all decisions of importance were made by the leadership and then communicated to the membership.
